The chocolate chip cookie is as all American as the stars and stripes, as famous as Coca Cola, and more well known than Monica Lewinsky’s exploits. Invented by the Toll House Restaurant in 1930, it was designated the official cookie of the Commonwealth on July 9, 1997. So now you know. Here are seven brands available in this little corner of the world.
Cadbury’s Luxury Cookies
The only chocolate batter, chocolate chip cookie, and the best of the packet variety. Offer these to guests who are on a diet – they look delicious, but have to be eaten with a knife and fork as they fall apart quicker than you can say “I’ll just get the hoover out, shall I?”. Nevertheless, a good chocolate rush for those who always have a napkin to hand.

Debbie’s Cookies
Amazing! True homemade cookies. If man can live by bread alone, then woman can live by choc chip cookies, and these are my choice. Moist and scrumptious, loaded with chocolate chips, these are everything a cookie should be. Not the cheapest, but well worth the price, and if you go along to Debbie’s cafe, the coffee and lemonade is thrown in free!
Price: varies according to weight, approx 30 cents for 1
Starbucks
By far the biggest of the cookies, and although pricey, a delicious combination of moist batter and crunchy chips. Very sweet, and big enough to feed a family of four! Starbucks have got the right idea, as this cookie is ideal with coffee – though you won’t need to add sugar to your drink.
Price: ?1 for 1
Ermes Own Brand
The driest of the cookies and, sadly, the chocolate chips had no taste at all. However, if you ever need a cookie to dip in your tea, this is the one to choose. It won’t fall apart even after a good dunking. I could eat ten of these and not feel I’d put on weight, as they are very light.
Price: 30 cents for 1
Gullon Diet Cookies
Two packets for the price of one was the attraction here, and also the fact that they are sugar free. Alas, when is anything labelled diet fun? Although these were crunchy, I might as well have eaten the packaging, it would have been more satisfying. Don’t try these at home.
Price: ?1.75 for 28 (on special offer – 6 cents for 1)
American Style Cookies
Almost more chips than batter, and a cookie I could claim was straight from the oven if looks were everything. The name, however, gives it away, the taste of these reminded me of a thousand other store-bought brands. There’s nothing original about these, but if your epicurean tendencies don’t run to cookies, then these will do.
Price: ?1.29 for 9 (11 cents for 1)
Vicenzi Mini Cookies
In that these are mini cookies, a magnifying glass was needed to find the chocolate chips. Quite dry, but don’t try dunking them without tweezers. Like Spanish lovers, small and moreish, but you’ll need more than one to fill the gap.
Price: ?1.15 for approx 30 (4 cents for 1)
