Fire wipes out factory in Aradhippou

A FIRE broke out on Thursday in Aradippou’s industrial area, completely destroying a clothes factory. Reports said the fire, which broke out at 3pm, was very large and that it took the fire brigade two hours to get it under control.

Reports say the total damages caused by the fire were close to £1 million.

A woman who was actually inside the factory noticed the flames and informed the fire services immediately. Eyewitnesses reported that they heard a series of explosions before the factory, Sergios P. Sergiou & Son Ltd, was engulfed in flames.

The fire brigade responded with 10 vehicles and a large number of men. On their arrival the fire was already in full sweep.

The firefighters were mainly concerned with restricting the fire to the factory and not letting it spread to the neighboring warehouses. Accomplishing that, they focused on the factory fighting the flames for nearly two hours, as there were flammable materials inside.

Overlooking the battle was the head of the fire department George Hadjigeorgiou.
Firemen remained at the scene throughout the night to completely wipe out the fire and to make sure it didn’t flare up again.

Police statements say that at the moment there doesn’t seem to be an issue of premeditated arson, but the results of their inquiries will be announced.
