Man accused of sexual assault on ex and stabbing

A MAN forcefully unzipped his ex-girlfriend to check whether she had had sex with another man, a Nicosia district court heard yesterday.

The 29-year-old suspect from Limassol could also face charges of assault and causing grievous bodily harm on suspicion of slashing an off-duty police officer with what is thought to be a Stanley knife.

He was remanded in custody for four days in connection with the incident and the sexual assault of his ex-girlfriend.

The court heard that the two broke up their three-year relationship around six months ago.

But the suspect continued to harass the woman throughout this time, police said.

Last Saturday, at around 9.15pm, the woman entered her home and saw a hooded man in front of her, the court heard.

He was wearing gloves, shorts and a T-shirt.

The man grabbed the woman, dragged her into the bedroom and threw her on the bed.
Police said he took off her belt, unzipped her trousers and told her he wanted to check if she had had sex with the police officer who is currently seeing her.

The woman recognised the suspect from an old surgery scar he has on the right leg.
She called his name and asked him to stop, the court heard.

“The suspect then took the hood off and threatened to hurt her, her daughter and her mother if she continued seeing the officer,” investigator Costas Constantinou said.

The woman started to scream and the suspect left her flat.

Two days later, she went to a nightclub with the officer and some other friends.

The suspect was also there with a friend whom the police know.

While the woman and the officer were making their way to their table, the suspect kicked her on the leg, police said.

She complained to the bouncers who asked the suspect about the incident.

“And the suspect replied that it was a lie,” the court heard.

The suspect and his friend left the club shortly before the complainants.

At around 3.15am, while the woman and the officer were heading for their car, they were intercepted by the suspect and his friend in their car.

The officer approached the suspect to find out what he wanted but realised he intended to attack him and tried to step back.

Suddenly he felt pain on his left side, between the chest and the abdomen, police said.
“He fell to the ground and saw that the suspect was holding a sharp object in his hand, which looked like a Stanley knife,” the court heard.

The suspect approached the woman and threatened to kill her and then left the scene in his car.

The officer was rushed to hospital where his wound was stitched.

He was released in the evening of the same day.

An arrest warrant was issued against the suspect, who was nowhere to be found.
Police reached him on his mobile and asked him to surrender to the CID in Nicosia but he refused.

He eventually did so on Monday, police said.

However, before he went to the station, and while the woman was there giving a statement, the suspect called her on her mobile: “You’re dead,” he allegedly said.
Police said the suspect was refusing to co-operate.
