Taxi drivers revolt in Paphos

PAPHOS taxi drivers yesterday started an indefinite strike in reaction to the operation of a bus company, which they claim was taking their business away.

Around 50 strikers blocked the junction leading to the airport, causing disruption to the town’s traffic.

Paphos police director Michalakis Papageorgiou visited the strikers and discussed their problems.
It was reported that the taxi drivers’ main gripe was a bus company operating in the tourist area in violation of its operating licence.

The strikers demanded their profession be secured and cowboy taxi drivers operating in the tourist area be prosecuted.

The taxi drivers association chairman Andreas Zaharia voiced concern that their problems would not be resolved.

He added that the strike would continue until final solutions were found for all their problems.
Papageorghiou said the police would accompany taxi drivers during their shifts to personally see what the problems were.

He expressed hope that the co-operation between them would improve the situation, without however resolving them entirely in such a short time.
