Demining starts in Kaimakli

DEMINING teams have started clearing the National Guard minefield in the area of Kaimakli, the Defence Ministry said yesterday.

The demining will be carried out from Monday until Friday from 8 am until 4 pm, a statement said.

The destruction of the mines removed from other areas was expected to take place yesterday and today in the area of the Barsak hillock between the villages of Yeri and Potamia between 8 am and 4 pm.

On Monday, the removal of mines began in the areas of the villages of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias and Denia. Demining work will be carried out from Monday until Friday between 6 am and 4.30 pm and on certain occasions on Saturday morning.

The mines which will be removed from the mine area of Kato Pyrgos minefield will be within the buffer zone and will be announced at a later stage. The mines to be removed from the Denia minefield will be taken for destruction to a place within the buffer zone in the area of the Nicosia Airport.

”The public and especially farmers should be careful and avoid the movement of animals and vehicles and should comply with the instructions of the police and the United Nations Peace Keeping Force so as to avoid accidents. During the demining process, approaching minefields at a distance of 100 metres is strictly forbidden, while during the explosions this distance will extend to 500 metres,” a UN statement said.
