Two arrests after shoot-out

TWO Syrian men were yesterday remanded in custody by a Limassol court in connection with Wednesday’s shootings in the tourist area. The duo was arrested late last night.

The court heard that they were both on board a car involved in high-speed chase with police after refusing to stop.

The car, carrying four passengers, came to a halt near the Yermasoyia river and the men fled on foot into the nearby fields.

Officers fired two warning shots in the air but one of the suspects pulled out a gun and aimed it at the police.

The officer opened fire, missing the gunman but hitting the man running next to him.

He was rushed to hospital where yesterday he was still in critical condition.

One other man was arrested shortly afterwards and was remanded in custody for eights days.
The two other suspects admitted being in the car but denied possessing a firearm.

A loaded gun was found in the area.

Police found a fifth Syrian man who was not involved in the case. He was arrested for illegal entry into the island.
