Grandmother’s transplant gift

A 46-YEAR old grandmother has given the gift of life to her two and a half year old grandson by donating one of her kidneys to ensure his survival.

Evridiki Manoli from Kiti and her grandson Nicolas both underwent the operation at Paraskevaidion Transplant Centre late last week after doctors discovered she was the best match for the child. The operation was carried out by Dr George Kyriakides from the Centre, who said yesterday that it was a success, and that both grandmother and grandson were doing fine.

Kyriakides said Nicolas was born with kidney failure and had been referred to the clinic by the Makarios Hopsital since birth. He said it had been impossible to carry out the transplant until the child had reached a weight of 10 kilos.

Kyriakides said there had been many donors, including all members of Nicolas’ family, but that doctors had established his grandmother was the best match.

He said Manoli was very happy to have had the opportunity to give a new lease of life to her grandson.
