Who stole Gandhi?

THE NICOSIA municipality is baffled over the theft of the bust of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, located in the park next to parliament.

Nicosia municipality official Christos Karydas said the bust was stolen around three months ago and the case was reported to the police.

When it was first discovered, workers who thought it was an act of vandalism had searched the immediate vicinity in a bid to find the bust.

Even a nearby water tank was emptied in hope of finding the sculpture.

And the security cameras in the parliament building next door did not pick up anything suspicious.
Karydas said the bust and the pedestal had both been restored around a year ago.

“It’s a mystery,” he said.

The theft of the bust preceded the stealing of hundreds of tulips planted in another municipal garden in Nicosia.

The flowers had been a present from the Dutch ambassador.
