‘Elections aren’t for another 3 years’

OPPOSITION DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades has lost all sense of proportion and is causing untold damage to the government at home and abroad, government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said yesterday.

The spokesman was commenting on ongoing statements by Anastassiades that the Greek Cypriot side needs to get its act together to launch a new initiative on the Cyprus problem.
New statements by the DISY leader on his departure for Brussels yesterday criticising government inaction on the Cyprus issue prompted a strong response from the spokesman, who accused him of acting like “a co-President”.

“The elections are not for another three years,” said Chrysostomides. “Mr Anastassiades has lost all sense of proportion and he continues with his intolerant statements. All he is doing is practising a devastating policy at home and abroad.”

Before leaving for Brussels Anastassiades said: “We need to prove with action and not with ambiguous proposals that we wish for a solution of the Cyprus problem.” He also accused the government of delaying tactics, which were being noted by the UN and by the EU

He was referring to last week’s announcement by Papadopoulos that the Greek Cypriot side had asked for a new initiative from the UN, which was denied next day in New York. The government then clarified that it has only asked for exploratory investigations into the possibility of new talks rather than a formal request.
