Our judgement has always let us down

Sir,
I have to admit that I am in full agreement with the recent letter by Nicos Margolis. I am not surprised at the Cypriot Armenians’ attitude towards the re-unification of Cyprus.

Too many Armenians over 30, especially those in Cyprus, have an understanding of politics that has often led to disastrous results.

During the EOKA campaign I was alone among the Armenians to despair at my compatriots’ short sightedness: how could they be pro-British? It used to anger me and made me feel ashamed, and even now after 50 years I still feel the same way. I was also the only Armenian to have backed EOKA’s campaign verbally and physically.

Unfortunately our judgement is failing us again with our opposition to Turkey’s entry bid to the EU. Just think, if Turkey’s bid is rejected, there is no telling what course Turkish politics will take, but whatever it is, it cannot be good for us.
