Stern warning over fire risk

THE FIRE Services have issued guidelines for people in order to avoid the risk of fires.

According to the law, it is forbidden to light fires in rural areas, while throwing lit cigarettes out of car windows is a major cause of blazes.

People working in the agricultural sector have been advised to take particular care and should use tractors to create a grass and rubbish-free zone around their properties. Therefore if a fire does break out, there’s nothing available to fan the flames.

Additionally, particular attention should be paid when using farm machinery as sparks and hot exhausts can lead to trouble.

According to the Fire Services, the official fire season runs from May to October with an average of 6,000 fires breaking out annually.

Ninety per cent of blazes are attributed to human carelessness.
