Buying drugs with fake banknotes

AN Iranian man has been arrested in Larnaca on suspicion of circulating counterfeit money and being in possession of illegal drugs.

After a tip-off, police found the man on Mackenzie Beach apparently buying the drugs with fake £10 notes.

He was immediately arrested with both the drugs and the fake notes in his possession.
Police then went to the house of the 30-year-old, where 161 forged £10 notes and three fake £5 notes totalling £1,625 were discovered.

He said he had obtained the money in the occupied areas.
The unnamed man arrived in Cyprus in 2001 and was given permission to stay on the island for seven days. He disappeared soon afterwards.
But he reappeared on the radar last Friday after travelling to the occupied areas and returning with the counterfeit money.

He has been remanded for a period of eight days by the Larnaca court, with police looking for his associates in the free areas.
