Fine for man who Goodbye kiss costs married man dearly assaulted woman

AN MAN of Arab extraction was yesterday fined £863 for grabbing a Polish woman’s mouth after she had refused to let him kiss her.

The 32-year-old man, who is married and lives in an apartment in Aglantzidja, was initially charged with assault and attempted rape but had the charge of attempted rape dropped by the prosecution after admitting the charge of assault.

A Nicosia court yesterday heard how the man had invited the Polish woman to his apartment on March 2 this year for a drink. The woman had accepted his invitation and met with the man him, at his apartment where it was reported they watched erotic DVDs and shared a bottle of wine together.

According to the prosecution, the man had reportedly tried to kiss her as she got up to leave his apartment and the woman began to scream after he persisted. He then placed his hand over her mouth in an attempt to stop her from screaming before letting her go.

The woman went to the police the following day and reported the incident but then retracted her statement. The charges against the man, however, still remained.

Appearing in court yesterday, the Polish woman told the court that she didn’t have any complaints against the accused and was excused from the proceedings.

Addressing the court, the man’s defence lawyer said that it was an unfortunate incident but that at no time had the man tried to assault or rape her.

“All that happened was that he tried to kiss her, she refused and started screaming so he put his hand over her to stop her from waking up the whole apartment block.”

The lawyer added that the man was having marital problems at the time of incident but has since patched up the problems he had with things up with his wife.

Ruling on the case, Judge Angelos David said that the circumstances surrounding the case did not constitute a punishment of imprisonment. The man was fined instead for the two charges of assault.
