EDEK: DISY is out of control

EDEK Secretary General Antonis Koutalianos yesterday blamed opposition party DISY of feeding populism amongst the people and acting irresponsible in the build up to the parliamentary elections.

His comments were dismissed by DISY officials, who stated that they weren’t even worthy of a response.

Koutalianos even called on the public to turn their backs on DISY.

“DISY is sliding uncontrollably low”, said the EDEK official “the party has resorted to using flowery methods on matters concerning our national problem simply for political gain ahead of the upcoming elections.”

Koutalianos then lashed out at the politics of DISY which he feels aims at weakening the defence of the island and causing upheaval when it comes to matters concerning the Cyprus problem.

Opposition party DISY had recently drafted a proposal to cut costs in the military while at the same time reduce the time that soldiers spend in combats during their national service.
“Firstly, they fought tooth and nail to implement the Annan plan and when they failed they condemned the government. Today they state that the reintroduction of the Annan plan would be national suicide

“Secondly, they walked out of the National Council shouting in all directions and causing problems to matters concerning the Cyprus problem.

“Thirdly, after failing to destroy our defence with the introduction of the Annan Plan, the National Guard and the Armed Forces of the island, they now state that they want to weaken the military of our nation by converting the National Guard into a semi-professional army.”

DISY Spokesperson Tassos Mitsopoulos laughed off Koutalianos comments, telling the Cyprus Mail that DISY would not stoop down to such low levels of mud-slinging.

“It is obvious that some individuals are lashing out like this simply to hide away the fact that they are not handling their own matters properly.”

His comments were echoed by DISY Vice Chairman Averoff Neophytoy who told the Cyprus Mail, “DISY’s official position on his comments is just ‘no comment’.”
