The wonderful Marcos Baghdatis

Sir,
May I be permitted to congratulate all of you on the wonderful champion that you sent to the Australian tennis Open, Marcos Baghdatis.

This amazing talent captured many of the hearts across Australia over the past two weeks with both his professional style of play and his wonderful personality.

Indeed, given the media coverage across Australia and indeed around the world, and how he was consistently billed as a true and loyal Cypriot, it could be said that he is in the army, the public relations/ambassadorial army and that he has done you proud.

While many a Hellene here tried to ‘kidnap’ his fame as a Hellene, he flew the flag of Cyprus such that Cyprus has a new glory in the world.

Mark my words – here is a force to be reckoned with and his loss was close – very close.
An overruled line call by the umpire cost him the second set, otherwise it would have gone to five sets and I doubt that Federer would have survived such a contest.

Congratulations to Cyprus. Congratulations to Marcos. We shall be looking out for you.
