Indigo children
Special children or spoiled brats? A new documentary attempts to shed light on the concept of Indigo Children
We all think our children are special and to a certain extent we are right, no two children, after all, are exactly the same, although that might be taking it a bit too literally. There is a growing belief among scientists and those with a more esoteric view that some children are special. Called the New Millenium children by the former and Indigo Children by the latter, these children represent what could be described as the evolution of the brain – they are here for a purpose.
Unlike in a science fiction film, they will not rise up to take over the world, their purpose is more subtle. Born with a brain that is dominated by the right hand side, they will question the existing order of things and in this way (hopefully) bring about change.
Every human age has been characterised by the colour of the aura of the general population. Most people are currently blue or violet, and this will move towards indigo – the current Indigo Children are something like the front runners, or so one theory goes.
Others believe that the majority of these children have been born (they are now themselves giving birth to Crystal Children, who in turn bring Rainbow Children into the world), there are still some that are coming through. So how can you spot if you’ve got one? “These children can be very angry, quite argumentative, psychic, without any respect for authority, very intelligent and quite hyper,” explained the island’s Suzanne Mitchell Egan. Handling one can be quite difficult and can lead to the anger imploding later in life, which can lead to depression.
Although the concept of these children is a little difficult to swallow, Egan – herself the mother of an Indigo Child (although she only realised it a couple of years ago) – said in other parts of the world, it is being given some credence, something she is keen to see happen in Cyprus too. She has even set up a consultancy and will identify Indigo (Crystal and Rainbow) Children and then advise on how to help (and deal with) them.
Indigo Children are so called because they are warrior children of the night (indigo) sky and because they also have something of a dark side. The main tranch of these children were born shortly before the incidence of hyperactivity and its related disorders started to peak. In a similar way Crystal Children (who are very loving and will only communicate with the people they want to) have arisen at the same time as an increasing diagnosis of autism.
As international understanding of this phenomenon increases, next Sunday (January 29) has been declared World Indigo Day. To mark it, the documentary The Indigo Evolution will be premiered at various points around the world including Cyprus. The film tries to answer the question ‘Are these Indigos only the fanciful notions of a few individuals embracing new-age beliefs (or mothers desperate for a label for their awkward children), or is there real evidence that they truly do exist?’ Indigos are featured on the film as are interviews with authorities in the fields of medicine, psychology, education, philosophy and religion.
There are, of course, dissenters; Indigo advocates believe that many children born after 1975 possess an Indigo-color aura around them and unique almost supernatural traits. To the rest of the world, these kids may appear to be unruly and their parents may have gone overboard in the coddling of their children. Indigo kids bristle at authority and have little patience. Their advocates say they act like royalty and have no guilt. Simple acts, like waiting in lines, drive them crazy.
“You have to be careful about this stuff,” warns Dr. Robert Butterworth, a child psychologist in Los Angeles.
“Don’t create some cosmic chip on their shoulders. It sounds very cute, but there could be other problems that these kids need help with, like hyperactivity.
“It’s OK if you think your kids have special talents, but don’t think your kid is the next Dalai Lama of the Orange County. That’s gonna create problems.”
So the real issue for parents of Indigo Children (whatever their age) is helping them deal with themselves, getting that square peg to round off a bit if not fit into the round hole. If blowing all the bad in the world into a balloon and letting it go offers some release then can there be any harm? Is branding someone and Indigo child and dealing with them because of it any worse than those tests that show what can of team member you are? Egan suggests bringing Indigos together so they understand they are not alone and having them watch videos and read books about it (in much the same way as any dysfunctional group would be treated).
A natural, generational development, molly coddled brats or a genuine new world order? Maybe the Indigo Evolution will have the answer.
