Two missing after ship capsizes

A SHIP registered in the north sank off the coast of Apostolos Andreas, the island’s most north-eastern point in the early hours of Thursday, leaving two of the ten crew members missing, presumed dead.

A third sailor was rescued. The remaining seven had abandoned ship on a lifeboat before it sank.

According to Turkish Cypriot press reports, the Dolphin-1 sank just after midnight 20 miles off Cape Andreas after suffering a problem with the rudder in bad weather. The crew were unable to take control of the ship and decided to bail but it did not sink immediately.
The ‘Minister of Public Works and Communications’ Salih Usar said attempts on Thursday to prevent the ship from eventually sinking, failed because it filled with water too quickly.
