More sheep in new foot and mouth scare

MORE SHEEP in the Dromolaxia area have initially tested positive to foot and mouth disease, the Agriculture Minister said yesterday.

Samples have been sent to the European Lab in London for confirmation after 23 out 54 sheep in a specific farm showed initial symptoms.

Minister Fotis Fotiou called on the public not to panic and await the final results.

Last week, a herd of sheep from Dromolaxia had initially tested positive to the disease, but farmers were relieved when EU test results found no traces of foot and mouth in the samples they received.

Farmers have spoken out about the damages they suffered over the past week, after the Veterinary Services decided to quarantine the area and three kilometres surrounding it.

Although the government has promised to compensate them, the farmers have warned that they have no choice but to increase their milk and dairy prices.
