Mayor tells truck drivers to move away from old port

LIMASSOL Mayor Andreas Christou met with truck drivers working around the town’s old port to explain why they have to stop illegally parking their vehicles in the area.

“Citizens have been complaining of the risk of accidents and a deadly accident has occurred quite recently. We feel that an intervention is necessary,” explained Mayor Christou.

The meeting, held at Limassol town hall on Thursday aimed to highlight the need for safety and security, as well as give a firm message to the truck drivers that they must park their vehicles elsewhere.

Two more meetings have been held in the past, whereby local authorities, including Public Works, Traffic Police and Limassol Council had discussed the situation with truck driver representatives.

“There are more vehicles there than is necessary. We already provide a large parking space, but too many trucks flock there and park in the streets, causing problems,” Christou added.

Around 7,000 trucks are presently parked in area of the old port.
