National guardsman returns to Cyprus from Israel

THE NATIONAL Guard conscript who was being treated in Israel for heatstroke was yesterday flown back to Cyprus.

Nineteen-year-old Neophytos Georgiou yesterday returned to Cyprus where he will continue to receive treatment at a Limassol facility following his two-month ordeal.

Although initially it was believed Georgiou was truck down with heatstroke during the heat wave in July, reports last night said Israeli doctors had blamed his condition on a type of viral infection of the brain.

According to state television Georgiou’s condition is much improved and although he still has impaired movement and speech, it is nothing that cannot be treated with physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Last night he remained in Larnaca hospital and today he is expected to transfer to a Limassol facility for his rehabilitation.
