Paphos go kart track reopens after accident

THE GO kart track in Paphos where a 12-year-old Belgian tourist was killed last month reopened yesterday after the court cancelled an injunction obtained by Yeroskipou Municipality to have its operation suspended.

At the end of last month, the Municipality managed to secure a court order shutting down the track until the investigation into the girl’s death was completed.

Little Valentine Weekers had visited the track with her parents, who were all holidaying in Paphos, on Tuesday before last when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the track’s rubber surround.

She was rushed to Paphos General Hospital and then to Nicosia where she died from her injuries four days later.

The Paphos court yesterday said it had been misled by the Municipality when it secured the first suspension order, and that it was no longer valid, according to the track owner’s lawyer Yiannos Georgiades.

Georgiades said it had been proved to the court that that the Municipality had given misleading information to the court to secure the original injunction

“The court has decided that the Municipality, via its lawyers had deceived the court to obtain the first ruling,” he said.

Georgiades also said his client would be seeking compensation from the Municipality for damage to his reputation, and that of his business.

A statement from the Municipality said it respected the court’s decision but did not rule out taking the issue to the Supreme Court.,
