Aztecas Tex-Mexican Restaurant
Satisfying food well served
Hola! Returning to Larnaca from a day splashing in swimming pools in Limassol we were feeling hungry and tired and in need of a tasty pick me up before heading home. While driving down the highway, that familiar ‘what shall we eat’ conversation began. As we were still in our beach clothes, and barely dry, we thought the tourist area along the Larnaca-Dhekelia Road was a safe spot to blend in. We remembered Aztecas Mexican restaurant, housed within an imposing terracotta-coloured building, with its terracotta walls and floor tiles, set against exotic green plants. We were given a warm welcome by the smiling waiting staff and the smartly-dressed tables exuded hospitality. We sank into our chairs with glee.
The plentiful staff were dressed elegantly in long, dark red or green aprons, crisp white shirts and embroidered multi-coloured waistcoats. As the restaurant filled up with diners and reserved tables were occupied, orders were handled with ease and efficiency.
We placed our starter order. Tortillas de Champignon (£3.65) and Salsas Supremas Tres Marias (£3.95) – which translates into mushrooms bundled into Mexican bread with blended cheese, and corn tortilla chips with salsa picante, guacamole and queso (cheese dip). The dips came on the side, with a salad garnish, and were all tasty, though the salsa picante was excessively hot and spicy for my tongue.
For main, my partner chose the Quesadillas de Taxco (£6.50). This toasted flour tortilla came wrapped around his chicken with vegetables and was oozing with cheese. On top sat a dollop of guacamole and another of sour cream, and the tortilla was served with rice and beans in the “traditional way”. The re-fried beans were tasty, vivaciously seasoned and the rice was pleasing.
My main course of Chicken Fajitas (£8.85) did not disappoint. The chicken didn’t sizzle as it was brought to the table, but the flavours were all there, and the onion was mouth-wateringly sweet. I picked up a soft tortilla and filled it with the generous portions of dips (fresh tomato salsa, guacamole and sour cream) and strips of delicious chicken and onions, before rolling it up and tucking in. It tasted good.
For dessert, as well as the delectable vanilla ice cream scattered with a good portion of strawberries (Fresas Frescas, £2.95) and dotted with strawberry sauce, all thoroughly enjoyable, we also had a chimichanga. This is a deep-fried burrito – a flour tortilla folded neatly into a rectangular package and usually filled with a wide range of ingredients, most commonly beans, rice, cheese and shredded meat. In this instance, it was filled with apple, with a hint of cinnamon, and was accompanied with vanilla ice cream and an apple-based sauce.
The quality of the restaurant shone through from the shiny-clean cutlery, gleaming white plates, sparkling glasses, and crisp linen tablecloths, to the service throughout our meal, which was top notch. Attentive but not overbearing, friendly staff refilled our glasses with drinks regularly and efficiently, and plates we had finished with were cleared from the table promptly. Complimentary Margaritas concluded the meal. We felt well and truly pampered after our exhilarating, exhausting day and ambled out of the restaurant content.
