Cypriots top A level results

CYPRIOT pupils scored top international marks at A level in seven subjects according to Edexel, the largest awarding body in the UK.

A record 77 local pupils scored top marks in Accounting, Fine Art, Modern Greek, Government and Politics, Ancient History, Maths and Pure Maths.

What’s more, pupils achieved a stunning 40 per cent rate of A grades, compared to the British average of 25 per cent.

“These are extraordinary results. The greatest number of students in Cyprus taking A levels do them with Edexcel, so the results are a very clear picture of how good our young people are,” said Jane Holliday, Edexel’s Regional Development Manager in Cyprus.

The results bode well for those who have made applications to UK universities.

Applications from Cyprus are up 36.2 per cent on last year, with only China, Ireland and France having greater numbers of applicants.

University runners
THE CABINET is set to consider an assessment report on applications made by local colleges, looking to be recognised as private universities.

The Evaluation Committee of Private Universities (ECPU), which operates under the Education Ministry, will be submitting its report to Minister Akis Kleanthous in a few weeks.

The colleges in the running are A.S Cyprus College Ltd, I.M.C.S Intercollege Ltd, Mesokeleas Ltd (owners of the Frederick Institute of Technology), Philips College Ltd and the Neapolis Academic Enteprises Ltd.

According to Kleanthous, in order to start functioning as universities, the colleges need first to register with the Private Universities Central Registry.

“If some of these colleges have responded completely to all the requirements and are ready to operate as universities, they may be able to secure now a date for their operation as universities,” Kleanthous added.
