TRIAL BY TV & PASYDY – George Christofides the President of the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) has been sentenced even before he has been told to appear in court. Whatever happened to the sanctity of innocent until proven guilty?
Almost every night this month we have seen his name on the TV news in huge letters, insinuating that he spied on staff through close circuit TV systems and other methods relating to emails and phone calls.
One thing every one seems to forget is that ‘big brother’ is everywhere – at least in terms of CCTV. Look around most TV stations, political parties, government ministries and maybe be even in trade union buildings – they all have CCTV systems. It also seems logical to have such a system in the CPC with ‘meson’ and corruption still rife in our society.
What stops employees from engaging in it if no one is checking on them for purposes of accountability, clarity and objectiveness? The campaign against Christofides clearly outweighs the logic of such realities. While some want an early end to this issue, through sacrificing the CPC President, it is more likely things will carry on through long drawn out court cases.
It is a shame, however, because every one seems to have forgotten that as recent as July 13 Christofides was elected President of the World Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs for the next four years.
I find it hard to believe that some one who is granted such a high ranking position, which will also include attending the UNESCO World Board meeting and General Conference, is all he is made out to be by the media, PASYDY employees and their smear mongering leadership.
POETRY ON WHEELS: Michael Dennis is London Taxi driver on a poetic mission. His has a unique approach includes leaving poems on the passenger seat of his cab for people to read.
Now there’s culture and democracy for you. Imagine sitting in a cab and reading poetry.
Michael’s lyrics are in my mind ideal for music as they have a set rhyme and pace which would easily flow in and out of both sounds and beats. More information from this bard on wheels via his website www.myspace.com/michaelspoems
RACIST MEDIA CONT’D: as long as people dish out discriminatory discourse on TV news stations, I will carry on writing about them. This week we were told how ‘an alien woman’ (the non-Martian kind) was abducted and raped by a ‘young man’. The 50-year-old ‘alien woman’ tried to fight him off but it was dark and no one was at the beach spot in Limassol where the attack occurred.
Why couldn’t the report have read as follows ‘a woman was raped last night in Limassol’?! Or if news journalists insist on abusing their Union’s own code of ethics by revealing people’s ethnic background then why is this not applied universally – why are ‘aliens’ always mentioned in these cases but never their attackers – who in this particular instance was a Cypriot.
A more unbiased, objective approach is needed if news journalists are to be news journalists. We are tired of gossipy blood hounds bending realities to suit their small minded horizons.
ALL QUIET on the polytricks front, everyone seems to have realised it’s holiday time. I sometimes wonder what the more obsessed politicians talk about besides polytricks when they are chewing on those tough August 15 souvles.
A nice breeze flows nowadays minus all the sectarianism and mudslinging. We can actually think freely without calling each other ‘patriots’ and ‘traitors’. Enjoy it while it lasts, as it will be drummed into our heads for the next 5 months until The Presidential Elections are done.
The New Democracy Government in Greece has the opposite approach. Elections could happen as early as September or October when in fact they are due by next March, 2008 the latest. Less trees being wasted, less minds being manipulated for longer periods of time, and much less fiery TV chat shows where the fat is overzealously chewed. Happy Hols for all!
