Road madness: 100 drunk drivers and assault on an ambulance driver

ALMORT 100 drivers from around the island were caught drink driving over the weekend, despite a previous warning from police of their heightened presence on the roads.

Meanwhile, investigators are on the lookout for a man who ran over an ambulance driver on Sunday morning and fled the scene, while, in a separate incident, five footballers of the APOEL youth team were involved in a car crash on the Troodos-Nicosia road.

Last week, police had issued several announcements warning drivers to be extra careful and exercise extreme caution on the roads because of the holiday period.

But their warning appeared to have fallen on 98 sets of deaf ears over the weekend and police will now be taking even more precautions in the coming days.

This weekend, police arrested 34 drivers in Nicosia, three in Larnaca, seven in Limassol, 53 drivers from the Famagusta district and one person from Kakopetria village after they were caught driving over the legal alcohol limit.

A traffic police official yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that “tightened measures will be ensured especially for traffic offences such as speeding, dangerous overtaking and, of course, driving under the influence of alcohol”.

Meanwhile, police in Protaras are on the lookout for the driver of a saloon car who rammed into an ambulance driver and then sped off.

According to the complaint from the ambulance driver, he was being overtaken by a saloon car when somebody from the vehicle threw two oranges at his windshield.

When both cars stopped at the traffic lights, he got out of his ambulance to confront the driver of the car.

The saloon car then suddenly drove into the driver and sped off at high speed.
The ambulance driver was then taken to Famagusta Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police are currently on the lookout for the saloon car.

In a separate incident on Saturday night, five youngsters who play for the APOEL youth team, had a lucky escape after being involved in a serious car crash just outside the village of Kokkinotrimithia.

According to police, the 18-year-old driver of the car, who is also a conscript in the National Guard, swerved to avoid something in the road and ended up colliding with an oncoming vehicle being driven by a 46-year-old man.
Despite extensive damage to both cars, neither of the youngsters was hurt, while the driver of the other car was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and then released.

The accident took place in front of the players’ coach who was in the car behind them. The youngsters’ parents also arrived at the scene.
