Underage bikers arrested

THREE underage riders were arrested in a co-ordinated police operation on Monday.

Members of the Kalo Chorio Police Station in the Nicosia district patrolled the area between 6pm and 11pm as part of a police campaign to stop underage driving.

A motorbike was stopped, whose rider turned out to be 15. He was arrested for driving without a helmet, without the consent of the vehicle’s owner and with no driver’s licence or insurance.

Another 15-year-old was caught on a motorbike and arrested for the same offences. He was also charged for driving without registration numbers.

A 17-year-old was later arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, after being stopped for driving his motorbike without headlights. He was also charged with driving a motorbike without a licence, insurance and helmet, and without the owner’s consent.

The three minors will later be summoned to court. Their relatives, who were the legal owners of the vehicles, were also charged and face court action for failing to protect their vehicles.
