Another school attack thwarted

POLICE yesterday managed to thwart the plans of a gang of Nicosia students, who’d boarded a bus with the intention of beating up their peers at another school, after being tipped off about the attack.

The incident took place at around 10am when students from Nicosia’s Technical School and Apostolos Varnavas Lyceum in Dasoupoli caught a bus to Latsia with the intention of beating up some of the district’s lyceum students.

“[But] a police patrol car was waiting for the students as they tried to scale the school’s fence and they ran off before they could hit anyone,” Nicosia deputy police chief Kypros Michaelides said.
He said one student was arrested with the help of citizens and that the youth had already given a statement. The police officer said further arrests were likely.

Michaelides added that youngsters’ delinquent behaviour was becoming out of hand and had to be stopped. He said schools and parents had an important role to play, and said police were in constant communication with schools.

“We are looking to find ways to deal with the students and to get the message across that they mustn’t resort to this sort of this behaviour which will be put on their record and blacken their name for their entire lives,” he said.
