It that all?

A LOAD of nonsense – that is what the police yesterday called press reports about an alleged orgy inside a Larnaca Fire Department station.

On Monday, daily Machi had run a story claiming that a group of firemen on night shift had turned their station into a “cabaret,” replete with sleazy artistes and booze.
According to the paper, the incident took place three weeks ago. The scandal was supposed to stay within the station, but in subsequent days the involved firemen started bragging about their “achievements.”

Although the Fire Department immediately issued an angry denial, the police launched an inquiry immediately. After taking some 40 depositions, investigators concluded the so-called incident was nothing more than an elaborate yarn spun by imaginative rumourmongers.

Apparently, what happened on the night was that a fireman who had served at the station decided to pay a visit to his former colleagues, accompanied by his girlfriend, who was of Eastern European extraction.

The visiting fireman was slightly intoxicated, so his friends offered him a cup of coffee. The girlfriend then excused herself, saying she would wait for her partner in the car while he chatted. That was about it.

“The newspaper report were the ravings of a smut peddler,” police chief Charalambos Koulendis told the Mail yesterday.

He said the newsman running the story had been duly reported to the Journalists Ethics Committee.
