Take seven cat litters

Carrefour own brand
The most noticeable about this one was the small size of the packet – limiting it to owners of just one cat – anyone with more, wouldn’t even glance at a box this small. Pretty much a case of “you get what you pay for” here: average clumping ability (some pieces still fall through the pooper-scooper), and very limited deodorising qualities.

Magic Sand
Unfortunately, this one completely lucked out. Despite it’s fabulous clumping potential, its deodorising quality is virtually non-existent, so it stinks. As if this is not enough, the tiny bits got stuck in my fluffy cat’s paws, leaving a little trail all the way through the house!

Catsan
This was a bit of a surprise, since it is quite a pricey cat litter. Long-lasting (over a week with three cats!) using the pooper-scooper, it contains an excellent deodoriser, clumps very well and even looks nice, as its stones are a fresh, clean, white. If you have just one or two cats, this is definitely the one for you! Worth the extra money.

Thomas Cat Litter
The largest bag on offer, available at most supermarkets, this cat litter is your run-of-the-mill “good value” item for people with lots of cats. Moderately clumping capability, and with a mild deodoriser (after a few days it does smell – even with a pooper-scooper), Thomas will help your pet allowance go further. That said, at least three times a year, stocks are completely depleted and the smaller 8 L packet is simply bad value in comparison at £2.93!

Fullers Earth Cat Litter
This cat litter didn’t even make the shortlist mostly due to its inability to disguise the smell. Texture was more clay-like and the bag, despite weighing the same as many others, definitely felt heavier. Good clumping potential was about it’s only good point.
Price: £2.24 for 5kg

VIP
Very similar to Thomas, but with better clumping, this cat litter quickly became a favourite, until we discovered that the stones were considerably less absorbent than most other brands. Very good for people with one cat only.

Le Chat
When I took a scoop of this cat litter and a scoop of Thomas I was amazed that I couldn’t tell which was which. Identical content, but packaged under different names, this “available from vets only” brand was much better value for its size, particularly with the 1 kg free. For critique, see Thomas cat litter – ditto.
