Ayia Napa golf course in the works

PLANS for the creation of a new golf course by a private company on a wooded area of Agia Napa are under way, the government has announced after a meeting between the Agriculture Minister, the Trade Minister, the President of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and tourism sector representatives.

Agriculture Minister Fotis Fotiou said that the golf course would “enrich” and elevate the quality of tourism in Cyprus.

Fotiou said that several golf course plans would soon materialise, and expressed his confidence that decisions would soon be taken on the creation of golf courses in the governmental-controlled areas of the Famagusta district.

He said that for a number of years now there has been a specific request by a certain company – in which many Famagusta district hotels hold stock – for the creation of a golf course in the Ayia Napa region, adding that efforts were under way to smooth over certain ‘problems’ that had arisen over the request.

Fotiou also noted that the government had already given preliminary approval to six new proposals for golf courses throughout Cyprus. The CTO and Ministry officials are set to discuss the thorny issue of water-usage on the golf courses.
