Refugees can vote in church elections in their present district

REFUGEES voting in the Archbishopric elections will be able to cast their ballot in the districts that they are presently living in, the Paphos Bishop announced yesterday.

In past elections, refugees displaced by the 1974 invasion had to vote at a specific voting centre on the island depending on the district they lived in before 1974. But in an effort to better accommodate refugees, this year, they will be able to cast their ballot (as refugees of their particular occupied district) in the voting centre by their present residence.

A new electoral law will also be sent to the printers for official publication at the end of this month, the Paphos Bishop said, although he did not give any details of the new law’s contents. Archbishopric elections are set for September 24.
