Policeman run over as he moves in for arrest

A POLICE officer was injured yesterday after being run over by a car driven by a group of suspects he had moved in to arrest.

The police officer had gone to the Lakatamia area of Nicosia after it was reported that a group of people were in the area selling fake jewellery.
When the officer approached one of the women, she ran to a car where another woman, two men and young child were waiting.

The car then sped off, hitting the police officer.
The officer was rushed to hospital where he was treated for an injured leg.
The suspects were later arrested and taken to the police station in Lakatamia.
They were charged and released.

According to police, the gang had been operating across the island, selling the fakes as real gold.

Their methods involved gaining sympathy by pretending to be poor, or by saying that their children have health problems.

The jewellery, including items such as rings and necklaces, are stamped with the words, ‘18 carat gold’, and are said to be good quality fakes.
They had been operating mainly in large, crowded shopping areas.
They will appear in court at a later date.
