Cars targeted in weekend arson attacks

ARSONISTS yesterday targeted a drug squad officer’s car, setting it ablaze during the early hours of the morning, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2am in Larnaca while the vehicle was parked outside the owner’s home.

The blaze caused £1,000 worth of damage to the car, police said.

Meanwhile Paphos’ CID is investigating another car fire which broke out at around 5.30pm on Sunday while the vehicle was parked on Theoskepastis Street in Kato Paphos.

The blaze was reported to the Paphos Message Control Centre which then alerted investigators to the scene. The fire caused extensive damage to the front half of the car amounting to £2,000. Police said evidence at the scene indicated the blaze was the work of arsonists.

In a separate arson attack, Limassol’s CID is investigating a fire which broke out at frozen food warehouse during the early hours of Sunday.

At around 3.20am arsonists targeted Soteriou Frozen Foods on Sinergatikou Street, setting a blaze which caused extensive damage to the building as well as the warehouse’s merchandise. Investigators said the culprits had broken in through the main door which had burned down to the ground.

The fire was spotted by neighbours who alerted police and the fire department.

Evidence was collected from the scene and sent for forensic testing, police said.

Limassol CID head Nikos Sophocleous said: “We have found some evidence which is being examined and hope that will lead towards solving [the case]…

“Unfortunately the complainant has not expressed any suspicions about anyone but there is some evidence that the police is aware of.”
