Husband-beater spared prison time

A WOMAN who repeatedly beat and assaulted her separated husband has been spared prison by a Nicosia judge.

Yesterday, the court had heard how the 35-year-old mother of two had assaulted her husband by throwing a jug at him.

Under the indictment, the office worker from Kaimakli in Nicosia was accused of assaulting her estranged husband on July 29, 2006 and causing him grievous bodily harm.

The second charge said the offence was committed in front of their five-year-old son and that “the experience could well have caused him psychological trauma”.

She also had seven previous convictions which included biting her former husband’s arm, kicking him in the genitals, punching him in the face, throwing a milk carton at him and hurling abuse at him.

She claims her husband was not a good father and husband, adding that he was having affairs with other women and was not paying enough attention to his family.

According to the most recent incident, of which she was found guilty, the mother was said to have been angered because her 46-year-old husband did not fill up the water jug in the fridge.

After shouting at him, she then threw the jug at him causing him bruising and scratching to his left elbow.

The plumber, who is also from Kaimakli, then went to police and reported his wife.

It was the eighth time since 2000 that he reported his wife to the local authorities.

Yesterday, Judge Alexandros Panayiotou took into consideration the mother of two’s obligation to her young children as a strong mitigating factor and decided to thus not send her to prison.

The woman, who burst into tears during the judge’s sentencing, was handed a two-month prison sentence which was then suspended for a three-year period.

Judge Panayiotou warned the woman to exercise every caution from now on, saying his court or indeed any other court will not be so understanding should she commit another offence again.

The judge had previously remanded the woman in police custody for two hours yesterday morning before sentencing her.
