Woman dies of crash injuries

TWENTY-year-old Christina Ioannou died at Nicosia general hospital during the early hours of yesterday morning. She is this year’s 38th road victim.

Ioannou and her friend Constantina Shacola, 20, were involved in a collision with a Ferrari in Nicosia nine days ago. It is thought the two young women were speeding on Crete Street and failed to stop at the Stassandrou junction when the accident occurred.
Both Ioannou and Shacola were critically injured upon impact. The 41-year-old driver of the sports car was taken to hospital, given first aid and released.

Ioannou, who is from Kokkinotrimithia, succumbed to her injuries at 5.50am yesterday.
Police said Shacola, who is from Astromeritis, was still in intensive care. Her condition was deemed “serious”.

Nicosia traffic police is still investigating the cause of the accident.

Police spokeswoman Chrystalla Demetriou said more than half of this year’s road victims were under the age of 25.

“What is worrying is that so many of the victims are young people,” she said.

According to traffic police, 22 of this year’s victims were younger than 25, with one in four fatalities due to excessive speed.

“Out of this year’s 38 road victims, 10 are due to speeding,” Demetriou said.

During the corresponding six-month period last year, 39 people were killed, police added.

Meanwhile, a 52-year-old Paphos man was seriously injured in a road accident on Monday. The accident occurred at around 7.45am when the 52-year-old, who was driving along Andreas Vlami Street in Paphos, swerved off course and crashed into a field.

He was rushed to Paphos general hospital where he is being treated in intensive care.

Paphos traffic police is investigating the cause of the accident.
