Matzourakis sacked by Omonia

OMONIA yesterday announced that they had parted company with Greek coach Yiannis Matzourakis, putting an end to recent speculation about his future.

Matzourakis has been under fire after a run of bad results in the league that saw the Greens lose touch with APOEL in the title-race.

Many Omonia fans saw last weekend’s Cup final against Anorthosis as his last chance to save his job, which the Greens lost 3-2.

Omonia Chairman Doros Seraphim, who met with Matzourakis both on Monday and yesterday, is said to be preparing the ground for a mass clear out at the Nicosia club.

Seraphim is also expected to make announcements about the futures of players that have underperformed recently, however it is expected that he will inform the players in question personally before any official announcement is made.

Matzourakis took over from Romanian coach Ioan Andone back in January, while he has also had spells at the helm of Anorthosis Famagusta and AEL before taking Greek team Skoda Xanthi to the UEFA Cup last season.
