Minister a witness to horror crash

A MAN was killed yesterday in a horrific car crash in front of the eyes of Agriculture Minister Fotis Fotiou.

Nicosia resident Andreas Stylianou, 24, was killed instantly when he lost control of his Volkswagon Golf and crashed at high speed into the side-railings of the Rizoelias roundabout on the Nicosia – Larnaca motorway.

The accident occurred at around 4.45pm.

Roads in and around Larnaca had been wet and some flooded from torrential rain earlier that morning.

According to police officials, one of the witnesses to the crash was the Minister of Agriculture who was one of many people who called the police.

Grabbing a fire extinguisher from the minister’s car, Fotiou’s driver managed to extinguish the flames, and within minutes an ambulance, police and firemen were at the scene but it was too late to save Stylianou who had died instantly as a result of the violent collision.

His body was yesterday taken to Larnaca General Hospital.

Larnaca Traffic Police began taking statements from at least four witnesses who saw the incident with one driver saying that around 200 metres before the Golf crashed, it was seen “zig-zagging” between cars involved in another car accident.
