THREE MEN were yesterday remanded in police custody in connection with the attempted murder of carpenter Andreas Klakides from the Nicosia district village of Dhali.
Yesterday, a Nicosia District Court ordered the five day remand of suspects Costas Krashas, 22, Nicolas Kantaras, 21, and Savvas Roussou, 22, after no objections were made from the men’s defence lawyer George Papaioannou.
The attack is believed to have been sparked by an argument the victim had with his former girlfriend, who is the sister of Krashas.
All men are under investigation for attempted murder, conspiracy, grievous bodily harm, illegal possession of a weapon, intent to terrorise and robbery.
According to CID Constable Antonis Eftychiou, the 31-year-old victim Andreas Klakides was attacked by the three men with knives and baseball bats after a meeting was arranged at the Hamatsos roundabout in Dhali so they could discuss some personal differences they had with the victim.
Yesterday, a Nicosia court heard how Krashas had informed the police after his arrest that Klakides had gone to his house and had a heated argument with his sister and his mother.
Klakides is believed to have been in a relationship with Krashas’ sister.
Krashas went on to say that he then called Klakides so that they could meet up to talk and that he had only taken a knife with him for protection.
“During the discussion inside the plaintiff’s car, the first suspect [Krashas] along with the other two individuals began attacking him with knives and bats injury him to the face, arms and stomach”, said the investigator. “They fight continued outside the car and they then left him bleeding after taking his mobile telephone”
The bloody Klakides was then seen lying in the road by a passing motorist who picked him up and drove him to a nearby clinic.
The surgeon who treated him has stated that he had sustained four knife wounds, three to the face and one on the head. He was also bruised all over his body.
Doctors said his condition was stable and that he was out of danger.
Krashas was picked up shortly afterwards after Klakides named him and the other two men as his attackers.
“The suspect said in his statement that he took the knife with him for protection. During the conversation a fight broke out between him and the plaintiff but that Roussou broke up the fight and they then all left. He claims that the knife fell on the floor during the fight and that it was not used”, added the investigator.
Judge Lemonia Kaoutzani ordered the five day remand of the suspects.
