Wall knocked down in jewellery shop heist

BURGLARS yesterday broke into a Larnaca jewellery shop and stole around £10,000 by knocking down one of the walls of the shop.

Investigators, who were yesterday questioning one man in connection with the incident, said the culprits had an elaborate plan that was executed at around 4.20am yesterday morning.

Yesterday, Deputy Larnaca Police Commander of Operation Christakis Papadopoulos told reporters, “Right now, a foreigner has been taken into police custody in connection with case. We are still looking for another person.”

He added that the man in questioning was a “non-Cypriot”.

The shop belonged to Takis Kavalaris from Pervolia.

According to police officials, the culprits broke into a warehouse next door to the jewellery shop, knocked down the wall and broke into shop on Leontos Sofos Street.

They then cut the wires of the central alarm system and broke into a drawer before escaping with a vast amount of jewellery, mostly gold and white gold rings.

A distraught looking Kavalaris told the media, “It is my opinion that the culprits knew what they were doing because they knew where to enter and what to do. They got away with around £10,000 worth of my property. What can I say?”

Yesterday officers had taken footage from security cameras from the next door warehouse as evidence.

Larnaca CID are still investigating.
