Remembering

By Maria Gregoriou

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CySO), in collaboration with the Armenian Genocide Centenary Committee of Cyprus, will present two concerts entitled In Memoriam on Thursday in Paphos and Nicosia on Friday.

The two concerts are devoted to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The concerts will be conducted by Cypriot maestro Haig Utidjian and the work to be presented is the Liturgy for Strings by Komitas, which has been arranged for strings by Zareh Sahakiants.

The work embodies traditional liturgical melodies transmitted and sanctified through devotion, over centuries.

The CySO will also present the elegiac contrapuntal elegy Metamorshosen for 23 solo strings by Komitas’ contemporary Richard Strauss. The work mourns the destruction caused by World War II.
