Poles seek support for EXPO 2012

A SPECIAL representative of the President of Poland was in Nicosia yesterday asking President Papadopoulos for his support regarding Wroclaw’s candidature to host the international EXPO exhibition in 2012.

Krzysztof Kurzydlowski said a letter from his President was, “very warmly received by President Papadopoulos”.

Other matters discussed included collaboration between the two countries, especially in the fields of science and higher education.

Dropiewski Przemyslaw, the Polish Consul in Nicosia, told the Mail: “We believe that Cyprus will support our application and that Cypriot society will get behind our efforts to organise the exhibition.”

Deputy Mayor of Wroclaw, Jaroslaw Obremski said there were no other European candidates for EXPO 2012 and expressed hope that Cyprus would support Poland’s bid.

If successful, the exhibition will take place in Wroclaw between June and September 2012, with over 4.5 million visitors expected. EXPO began in 1851 as a way to present industrial achievements, with Poland taking part in every edition but never having hosted the event.
