Tassos confident of euro adoption

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the conviction that Cyprus will be able to join the Eurozone on January 1, 2008, according to CNA.

Invited to comment if Cyprus may face any difficulties as regards its accession to the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), Papadopoulos said on Sunday: “I think no one can predict what will happen, but we are on a good track, all of our indexes are satisfactory.”

Papadopoulos expressed the belief that as time passes by, the accession of new countries to the Eurozone will become more difficult, and that Cyprus, having met the European Bank requirements, will be able to join it in 2008.

Yesterday, a meeting between Finance Minister Michalis Sarris, Central Bank governor, Christodoulos Christodoulou and members of Parliament’s Finance Committee was cancelled.

A source at the Ministry told the Mail that, “the Finance Committee asked for the meeting to be rescheduled for next week as several members could not attend.”

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the latest efforts in the adoption of the currency.
