Second young man dies in road accident

LESS than two days into the New Year and a second young man was killed in yet another tragic road accident.

Twenty-two-year-old George Anastasis was killed on the Avdellerou-Aradippou road at 4.20pm yesterday.

His death comes less than 48 hours following the tragic loss of 17-year-old Georgios Mavrikios, son of CyBC General Director Marios Mavrikios.

Police said the circumstances under which the Larnaca man’s car swerved off course, ploughed into a road sign and flipped over, were being investigated. He was not wearing a seatbelt and had to be cut out of the vehicle before being transported to Larnaca general hospital where he died from his injuries.

Anastasis’ 18-year-old passenger was only mildly injured in the accident. The teen was wearing a seatbelt, police added.

The latest death highlights the macabre beginning to the New Year and police failure to crackdown on the number of road deaths.
