Farmer crushed to death by bail of straw

THE family of a 60-year-old man face a difficult New Year after the animal farmer was crushed to death in a horrific work accident, police said yesterday.

Antonis Adonis died on Sunday when he was crushed to death by a 400 kilo bail of straw at his farm in the Limnes farming area in the Famagusta district village of Avgorou.

Under circumstances being investigated, Adonis somehow became trapped under the bail. He was found hours later, at around 7.30pm, by a relative. The 60-year-old was transferred to Famagusta general hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death will take place this morning. Criminal activity has already been ruled out.

The victim leaves a wife and four adult children. His daughter was due to be married soon.

Famagusta district CID and Xylofagou police station are investigating.
