Moni desalination plant up and running

THE TEMPORARY floating desalination plant at Moni in Limassol is now fully operational, pumping 20,000m³ of water per day. Following a 72-hour trial period, Water Board technicians confirmed that the plant is running smoothly and could start sending water to the reservoirs of the Limassol Water Board.

The desalinated water from Moni was initially transported to the dried-out Kourris dam, but following a series of tests by state technicians and chemists, the OK was given to start sending the water directly to Limassol’s reservoirs. A confirmation of the water’s quality by the State Lab was also required, before starting this process.

The desalinated water will now be sold to Limassol Water Board for €1.38 per cubic meter, and is expected to alleviate Limassol’s water shortage. The two boreholes at the Garyllis River are also expected to start operating any time now, producing an additional 10,000m³ of water per day.

Limassol possesses water reservoirs at Yermasoyia and at Kapsalos, with a combined capacity to hold 50,000m³ of water. As the water from Greece is also sent to these reservoirs, there may be quantities of excess water, which will be sent to Kourris and Yermasoyia Dams, or to other districts in Cyprus.

The mobile desalination plant was constructed by Subsea Infrastructure Ltd and Nirosoft Industries Ltd, commissioned by the state for the project.
