Sir,

Is there a law in Cyprus about driving a vehicle whilst using a handheld mobile phone? Or rather, about not using a mobile phone while driving?

Is there, really?

During the main tourist season, my wife and I booked places on a tourist coach for a visit to Paphos. The coach was due to pick us up at the roundabout near the old port.

In the 20 minutes we were waiting for the bus, we stood at the single carriageway where the dual carriageway merged some way back.

In that waiting period I counted 15 motorists driving while talking on their mobile phones. Four of these were driving heavy vehicles.

Of these 15 law-breaking drivers, five went all the way around the roundabout into Irinis road, leading northwards.

Is there a law about this in Cyprus. I later spoke to an off-duty policeman and told him that at £50 (€85) per fine, his salary could soon be earned – if not his annual one in a week.

Is there really a law, though?
