Man remanded for wife’s attempted murder

A 42-YEAR-old man from Limassol was yesterday remand in custody after shooting at his ex-wife in a Limassol street. The intervention of onlookers, who grabbed the man while he was aiming at the 36-year-old woman with his hunting shotgun possibly averted tragedy.

The incident took place at 6.30pm on Thursday, when the woman had just dropped off her son for sports practice at the Themistokleion Stadium in Polemidia. As she was driving off, she heard someone banging on the back of her car and opened the door to see who it was. Her 42-year-old ex-husband then attacked her, beating and kicking her all over her body. The woman managed to escape through the passenger door and started running.

The 42-year-old then went back to his car and took out a shotgun threatening to kill her. The woman slipped and the man stood next to her aiming at her with the gun. At that point onlookers intervened, grabbing the man from the waist to stop him from shooting the woman. While an onlooker was holding the 42-year-old, he fired the gun into the ground, without hurting anyone. Onlookers managed to immobilise the man until police arrived at the scene.

It was later determined that the shotgun belonged to the man’s brother and that the suspect does not hold a gun licence.

The 42-year-old appeared before Limassol Court yesterday, where an eight-day remand was issued. The suspect, who declined to have a lawyer present, was charged with attempted murder, violence in the family, illegal possession of a gun, and other gun-related charges.
