44 illegal immigrants in the last three days

A TOTAL of 44 illegal immigrants arrived in Cyprus over the past three days from Iraq via Syria and Turkey.

A new group of Palestinians from Iraq were arrested trying to cross over from the occupied areas in the early hours of yesterday morning – six men, two women and four children.

The detainees told police they had arrived in Turkey from Syria, before taking a speedboat to the occupied areas, where they were arrested and remanded for eight days.

The United Nations then intervened and they were freed, before crossing over to the free areas. The migrants yesterday applied for asylum to the Immigration Office.
