A real message for the future

Stefanos Evripidou’s article in last Sunday’s edition is a really balanced and intelligent assessment of the need to improve the teaching of history in Cyprus schools.

I hope the Minister will have read it, and been fortified in his intention to move away from the one-sided view of history perpetuated in many textbooks.

Rewriting books will take some time, and will no doubt be obstructed by the Church, as they have already threatened to do. However, surely there is one thing the Minister has the power to do right away; that is to instruct schools to fly the flag of Cyprus over its buildings, and not the flag of Greece?

That would send a real message for the future.
