Bollards block illegally parked cars in

BOLLARDS were yesterday erected at the edge of Larnaca Salt Lake, with drivers of illegally parked vehicles in the area urged to move them as quickly as possible in order not to become trapped.

The area surrounding the lake, which is situated a stone’s throw from Larnaca Airport, is being used by airline passengers seeking to avoid the high charges at the airport’s car parks.

This has led to pavements being inaccessible to pedestrians and dangerously-parked vehicles posing a risk to oncoming traffic.

The Chairman of the House Communications Committee, Zacharias Koulias, visited the site yesterday and announced that 4,500 green-coloured bollards would be going up at a cost of €27,500.

Work will last for 45 days and will see the bollards erected on both sides of the Airport-Kiti road, overseen by the Public Works Department.

Larnaca Police Chief Soteris Hadjichristofi yesterday told the Mail that the bollards “will stop the phenomenon of illegal parking,” and said that efforts were under way to immediately contact drivers whose vehicles are currently parked on the site.

“Spaces are initially being left so that there is a route out and we will help those who cannot get there in time to move their vehicles if and when they contact us.”
